    Service Hand

    RIPLEY

    When you arrive

You should aim to get to church between 7:45 and 8am.

When you arrive, you should message whoever you are service handing to let them know you will be their service hand and confirm when they will arrive (ie. Ps Mark, Ps Ryan, Ps Andy or whoever it may be - for a guest speaker, message whoever is driving them to church).

The person you are service handing will generally arrive in the car park outside Citykids.

Arriving that little bit earlier just gives you a chance to make sure everything is in order upstairs and the producer is able to let you know of the big things happening in the service before the speaker arrives.

When you arrive, you should do the following:

    • Ensure the lectern and tall table are behind the screens. You will need to check with whoever you are service handing to see what their preference is while preaching.

    • Check for the connection cards which are usually sitting on the front row. Just have a read through and make yourself familiar with how the service will run and what you might need to check on or help with.

    • Grab the service hand box from sound desk - if there is anything running low or missing from the box, post in the service hand Facebook group so it can be replaced during the week.

    • Place 2 - 3 bottles along the front row, one bottle on the little table next to the leather chair around the side, and take one bottle with you to meet whoever your service handing in the carpark when they arrive.

    • Place the mints, hand sanitizer, tissues and hand towel on the small table beside the leather chair.

Once you know when the person you are service handing will arrive, make sure you are down in the car park waiting for them to arrive so you can meet them at their car. The door to get back in near the car park is normally locked so try and keep it ajar if you can. Otherwise ring the door bell.

    When they arrive

When the person you are service handing arrives, offer to take their things (bags, iPads etc) to carry up to the auditorium for them - you will need to look after their stuff during the service. Make sure that things like IPad’s and phones are on silent if possible.

You’ll then just follow them upstairs into the auditorium for a sound check. When you get into the auditorium, provide them with their connection card to look at.

Producer then does a sound check. You just need to grab the lapel off the front row and turn it on. You turn the headset on by flipping down the front panel and holding down the “On/off” button until the screen lights up - make sure to check the screen to ensure it does not say “Mute”.

If the speaker wants to use a handheld mic, just let the producer know

Be attentive during this time, watch them and what’s going on. They will normally talk to the producer about things that are happening during the service and may make changes you’ll need to be aware of. It also helps the producer to have a second set of ears listening during the sound check.

After sound check, the person you are service handing will usually go through their notes and use the space around the screen. Just wait close by and keep your eye on them in case they need something.

At this point, you should also put on your headset - this will give you direct communication with the producer at the back.

    During the service

Once doors open, the person you are service handing will usually mingle but just make sure you are near by and keeping an eye out in case they need you for something.

Make sure you are always listening through the headset, the producer may need you to tell the connections host to get on stage for example.

During the second song you will need to get the speaker to put their mic on (if using the headset). You just need to follow them behind the side screen to help them put it on. While putting the mic on, you should:

    • For female service hands, make sure there is some else around the side with you while put on their headset.

    • Make sure the pack is on (flick down the cover and press the button that says “on/off”.)

    • Help the speak with putting the pack down their shirt or jacket and clip the cord on the neck of their shirt.

    • Once the headset is on, check that the mic isn’t too close to their face/cheek.

Once the headset it on, you need to check with the producer to make sure they have a signal on his mic - you can do this by speaking through the headset. After this, the speaker will usually take their seat until they need to preach.

You will need to be aware of when the speaker needs to go on stage so that you are ready to follow them with the tall table or lectern.

Once they have finished preaching, follow them behind the screen to take their headset off. You should offer them a mint and some water as well.

At the end of the service, you will need to place the prayer banner out while the connections host is doing their final prayer.

    After the service

    • If the speaker needs to leave straight away, you will need to collect their things and follow them to the car.

    • If they are not leaving, you will need to shadow them through the foyer, making sure you are always close by. Offer to get them a coffee or a tea, or anything else they may want. They will either let you know when they are ready to be accompanied back to their car, or they will release you for the morning.
